The MR2 put a mid-engine layout, the recipe of exotic supercars, within reach of everyday drivers. The second generation, built from 1989 to 1999, grew into sleek proportions often compared to cars costing several times as much.

In turbocharged form it was seriously quick, and its balance rewarded skilled hands. It also earned a reputation for biting the careless, which only added to the legend.

Today it is a cult favourite, proof that the mid-engine experience never needed a six-figure price tag.

Construction: Neck ribbing, side seamed, shoulder to shoulder tape, double needle hems, preshrunk to minimise shrinkage
